19. go to bed at 9:15 pm

inadvertently, i went to bed at 9:15 last night. while my body does feel pretty good, i can honestly say, i would still like to get right back in bed and go right back to sleep. it's sad.

this weekend was pretty cool, though. saturday i did nothing pretty much all day and it was awesome. later, i went to jesse's and hung out for a bit, then went back home. i did my mom's hair, then i went to bed relatively early.

maybe my body is getting old or something. there once was a time that i wouldn't have dreamed of going to bed before 11, because i was at work. or because i had just gotten off work. or because it was too early. now, if i could get in bed at 5:30 pm and sleep until 5:30 am, i would do it. i love sleep. i hate when i miss out on it.

sunday i picked up around the house, packed up some clothes, and then jesse and i hung out. we actually ended up getting a room close to work so that we could wake up later than usual and only have about a 5 minute drive to work.

it was awesome! and the hotel served a full breakfast, too. pretty neat, and included with the stay price.

last night, i guess i was pretty tired or something because i hit the bed and jesse was falling asleep first. as soon as i'd nudged him a few times, the sleep bug hit me and i started to doze. then we both were asleep.

but we kept waking up randomly, too. so i think that's why i'd rather just be in bed right now, watching the tv and falling asleep whenever i feel like it.

have you ever tried to go to bed earlier than your regular bedtime? did it work out/benefit you the next day? i'm curious as to whether i should continue doing this or not...

26. make thanksgiving dinner alone

i'm really flying through this 52 in 52 list. i really hope i can actually finish it by the deadline, but i will still end up making a donation to susan g. komen because cancer sucks bad.

i'll admit humbly that it's mostly because i'm full of the awesome, but probably more so because i'd feel bad if i didn't donate and my only motivation to finish the list was so that i didn't have to donate. then i would be a horrible person.

on the scale of horrible people where 1 is peter (because he wasn't completely horrible, he just denied jesus 3 times) and 10 is osama bin laden (who was so horrible that he had to be buried at sea), i would be nestled comfortably between president bush (the one who golfs while simultaneously sending troops to war) and president clinton (the one who had sexual relations with that woman). i think that's accurate.

i cooked the entire thanksgiving meal (with the exception of the sweet potatoes my younger sister just had to make) alone. it was so refreshing. i just had time to myself and since i love cooking, i really enjoyed making such a huge meal.

because i've been having issues with allergic reactions, indigestion, and acid refluxy feelings, i decided to forego making homemade macaroni and cheese and stuck mostly to the earthy/grainy foods that aren't so horrible for everyone's cholesterol. here's the menu:

turkey
string beans
mashed potatoes
stuffing (or dressing, however you say it)
sauerkraut
cranberry sauce
corn muffins
deviled eggs
sweet potatoes*

typically we would add baked macaroni & cheese, collards, maybe cabbage, and yeast rolls to that list, but there were only 4 people in attendance this year: my mom, my sister, jesse, and myself. and later that evening, jesse and i went to his parents' house to eat their food. so everyone won, especially jesse and i.

this holiday also rocked for 2 additional reasons: 1, i got a 4 day weekend away from work that i spent mostly with friends and family (thanksgiving thursday, birthday dinner friday, birthday dinner saturday, and relaxation sunday), and...

i got jewelry!

jesse got me this really pretty, 10k white gold ring with 3 diamonds! and it's not even an engagement ring! he's awesome for a lot of reasons, but that's definitely at the top of the list now.

definitely. extra rings? who wouldn't be happy?

YES!

that deserved all caps. i have been trying to post blogs all week! but my work computer is ancient and the i.t. department will not let me upgrade my browser. basically, i thought i would try to be slick and do it anyway and i clicked on "try the updated interface" so i could see a bunch of cool stuff that you guys probably see, but it backfired and would only show an error page because i.t. put blocks on the upgrads to anything higher than internet explorer 6.0. when have we last used 6.0? was that in 1995? so blown.com

at any rate, i have so much to share! i did cook thanksgiving dinner myself, which is too much for this update post. i also worked some overtime at work this week, which pretty much told me that the company likes giving away money; and i started my consulting business! how rocking am i?

pretty rocking.

18. get a physical (ugh...)

yesterday was the longest day in the history of days in life.

i went through the most extensive testing ever by getting a physical/well woman exam plus allergy testing.

for those of you who have gone through allergy testing, i just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me know what to expect. you're so awesome, i can't even put it into words.

i hope you felt the sarcastic sucker punch right upside your head.

i was totally not expecting to be pricked about 60 times to test me to see what could possibly kill me. it was terrible.

the only good thing that came from it is now knowing that i have oral allergy syndrome and i have a few options for treatment:

1- continue to avidly avoid the foods/trees i'm allergic to, keeping an epi pen handy.
2- undergo allergy shots 2x/week for 3 months, then once every week for 3 months, once every 3 weeks for 3 months, once every 3 months until i can stop. so forever.
3- take seasonal allergy meds and avoid the foods/trees i'm allergic to, keeping an epi pen handy still.

i'm up in the air about the shots. i don't have any aversion to needles or anything, i just don't know how great of a mood i would be in, having to go to work after that twice a week. i don't think it'd be fair to my coworkers. and seeing that i would have to sit at the office for about 30 mins afterwards for monitoring (you know, just in case i die or something), if i have a bad reaction to the immunizations, it's the epi pen and the emergency room for me, which could cause some issues with my employment--not a good look, when the insurance is paid by my employer. so technically i would need to still be employed to get these shots.

*sigh* so many options. i already have the epi pen prescription, and since the fall is a down season for me with allergies, i can wait until the weather breaks to get it.

since i found out i don't just "sneeze" when it comes to dust and mold, i might want to get that sooner, since my job is full of both dust and mold (smh).

in regards to an earlier post about girly parts, the doctor who did the physical decided to put me back on birth control to help with the pcos. i'm also taking freaking prilosec to help with the burning sensation in my stomach, but if that doesn't work again, it's back to the lab to get another ultrasound; this time on the upper right quadrant of my stomach. where the gull bladder is.

to aid in preventing ovarian cancer/cysts/endemetriosis, i got the first string of the HPV vaccine. the shot felt like the tetanus shot, which feels like crap. the nurse had to pinch my skin and then shove the needle in my arm, but the worst part was feeling the vaccine leave the needle and enter my body. it hurt so bad. it felt like kryptonite.

because yes, i know what that feels like.

13. have my car detailed

i love the barter system. it gets me a lot of free things that i would, otherwise, have to purchase. i like money; i don't like to spend it all the time, especially when i can trade with someone for something.

i traded a hairstyle for having my car detailed. pretty freaking awesome, right? i'm a hustler.

i did my sister's hair last weekend. it took eleventy two hours to complete, because her head is slightly huge plus-sized, but it was worth it.

yesterday, since the weather was nicer than it has been in a few weeks, she cleaned my car! she vacuumed everything, wiped everything off, cleaned out the cup holders, and febreezed the seats (my request). i told her not to wash the outside of the car, because it's one of my favorite things to do.

i still want to be able to go to a professional detailer to have everything done: wash, hand wax, steam cleaning, polishing, etc., but this was really awesome in the meantime. it looks new inside; she did a really great job!

this weekend was also my mom's 54th birthday. she doesn't look one minute over 35, i promise. it was really fun celebrating with her. i took her to the mall to shop for a dress and accessories. we succeeded. she found a really nice dress for a really great price. i took her out to dinner and got her birthday dessert. she had a great time.

sunday, we went to a church we hadn't visited in a while, and it was nice. it was also nice to get out of church before dusk, so that was a plus. i may go back next sunday.

my weekend was pretty nice. how was yours?

33. talk to my ob/gyn about fertility testing and ovulation

yes, i’m alive.

so i knocked this one off my 52 in 52 list yesterday, and i wasn't even trying to do so.

come to find out, there’s a lot going on in my lady parts. i have something called pcos, which is so much fun that it makes me sick sometimes.

more info (if you want to know): http://women.webmd.com/pcos-directory

pcos is an acronym for polycystic ovarian syndrome. my doctor figured this out, just by asking a few very good, very personal questions. i really like her. it was my first time going to her because i'm new to annapolis (for adulthood, anyway), and all of my doctors were in richmond. i'm definitely not driving there from annapolis.

i went to the doctor, originally, because my stomach hurt really bad. it wasn't farts or poops, it was like pain/discomfort. no nausea, no cramps...just this random stabbing sensation. it felt so good.

i stayed in bed mostly on wednesday. it felt pretty good. when i started getting ready for bed, i got a few more stabs (probably just for kicks). my mom asks, "are you pregnant?" and immediately i'm like "no. not even possible right now."

thursday i wake up and i'm in even more excruciating pain, so i call out of work, again. i hate calling out of work. the last time i called out was because this dumb lady used the shoulder as passing lane in rush hour traffic and ended up hitting my car. it was so fun that day. (rolls eyes)

my insurance is hmo (not homosexual; hmo), so in order to even go to the doctor, my insurance carrier makes me choose a primary care physician and only go to them first before going anywhere else. fine by me, as my copay is freaking sweet and i don't have to meet a deductible.

i get to the doctor and do some paperwork. i'm thinking the doctor's going to prescribe me something for acid reflux or tell me to buy some tums, right? that's what they do.

no. not so much.

so yeah, i got about 6 vials of blood taken for testing on just about everything from hormone levels to insulin levels to blood count. i even peed in a cup to test for pregnancy (negative) and so that they can do a urinalysis. my stomach is extremely sensitive and i really don’t know why at this point, other than the fact that it probably has something to do with pcos. i’m in a pretty good amount of pain, but i didn’t want to call out of work again, so here i am, at my demise work.

i won't lie, i'm slightly frustrated because i totally wasn't expecting the office visit i got, but at least i’m finally getting some solid answers and i'm headed in the right direction.

i have more stuff coming up later this month as far as testing. i have to get a pelvic and intra-uterine ultrasound, i have to get a physical including a women’s yearly exam (joy, deep down in my soul), and i even get to see an allergist. i’m so excited, i’m beaming.

so inadvertently, i got to talk to my doctor about fertility issues and ovulation. the doctor says it’s nothing to really be worried about at this point, but being on a birth control that gives me a cycle every month is going to help more, because my body needs to be re-programmed to do what it's supposed to do, monthly. like flush, and ovulate. i currently don’t have a cycle—which in my opinion, is awesome. it's just not so awesome for child-bearing purposes, and since i actually want a kid or two, i definitely need to bite the bullet and get hip to having a monthly cycle.

the doctor wants to see if i have cysts on my ovaries, because the build up of not having a cycle can cause endometriosis. also, pcos can cause pre-diabetes and diabetes, because the body has trouble responding to the insulin that is produced, which can result in high blood sugar levels.

the worst part is it's not common in my family. clearly my mother can have kids with no problem. she had me and my sister. she's always had a regular cycle. my grandmother had 5 kids, always had a regular cycle. nobody has this except me, in the entire world. which is why there is already so much literature on it on reputable websites.

they were waiting for me.

i hope you all felt the sarcasm. i tried to make it as tangible as possible.so yes, the past 2 days have been amazing. like a mini-vacation. i'm looking forward to learning more about this syndrome, but if there's anyone out there who has dealt with this, please contact me with things that have worked for you to get everything running better, and even support. i really need it.

xx,
ronetta

5. have a weekend all to myself at least once

this past weekend, i did everything i wanted to do, mostly alone. and. it. was. awesome. yes, i did do a few things with others, but i had a very relaxing time with no pressure to do anything i didn't want to do.

i would stop there, but this past week was absolutely ridiculous.

okay, so i've been going to the gym everyday for the past 3-4 weeks. except last week, because it sucked. it went by really quickly, but it was something like a quick mess. i don't know. it's all a blur now. nothing really memorable happened except for a lot of ridiculous traffic and the fact that the ravens and the redskins lost last weekend.

yesterday, the ravens almost killed me (again). they were down 24-3 at the half, but came back for the win. joe flacco sometimes blows me. figuratively, not literally. i think tyrod taylor should've had a go at quarterback yesterday, but whatevs.

the skins? not so much. they got shut out 24-0 by the freaking buffalo bills (what the hell is that even about), and john beck got sacked a record 9 times. oh, not to mention, it was shanahan's first shut out in his entire coaching career. how ridiculous.

i did get to watch some episodes of the office on netflix (they just got season 7!!!), my all time favorite show, over the weekend. that was really fun and relaxing. i did some lock maintenance on jesse's dreads, which was really fun for me since i haven't done them in a while (they look amazing). i went to the gym with my mom and we went to dinner afterwards.

my weekend rocked!

i'm sure this post probably won't get a lot of feedback, but i am just so happy to be coasting through my 52 in 52. it's rare that i stick to something for an entire year (boredom, adult ADD, stuff like that you know), so it's encouraging to see that i've knocked out 2 months consistently. annnnnd, i've done a bunch of other cool things, too, like joined a gym and went consistently for the past 3 weeks, baked a cake (not from scratch, but it was so good), and my knee is doing so much better, too! it gets stiff and feels weak at times, but no complaints here.

oh, and for 80s day at work today, i cut my hair into a mohawk and did some really colorful makeup. today is awesome, and this week is already looking promising.

xx,
ronetta

41. take a day to pamper myself (etc...)

yesterday, after a great weekend with the infamous jesse, i spent time alone...pampering!

yes!

it was so much fun. i got a manicure/pedicure, did my own hair and facial, and i shaved (this actually happened on saturday). shaving is my absolute least favorite part of female hygiene. i hate shaving. i put it off as long as possible, and by the time i actually crack down to do it, it takes forever. especially if combined with washing my hair and deep conditioning. i hate it.

but i love the outcome. so i guess it's worth it. i should probably just resolve to shave every week (like a lot of normal people i know), but most times i just do not feel like it. and if i resolve to shave every week, i'm sure that there'll be one saturday (probably the first saturday after this resolution begins) that i look at my legs and say, "they're not that bad, i'm just gonna wait until next week." and this will continue, until i look like a woolly mammoth. it never fails.

so i went to holly nails to get my mani/pedi. a place i said i would not go to again because the last time i went, i think i got a plantar's wort on the bottom of my foot. <--not cool. especially because i didn't know that's what it was until jesse noticed i was limping and said, "lemme see it." i was content to keep scrubbing/washing it until it disappeared.

apparently, that's not how it works. so i had to get a dr. scholl's removal kit. cleared it up in 2 days tops. really awesome stuff. sucks that i needed it, but whatevs.

anyway, this time i went, the lady cut me three times. who does that? with the cuticle trimming, she clipped me twice on my left foot. it felt so awesome. during the manicure, she trimmed the cuticle too low to where my thumb bled from a little knick and she had to put ointment on it. lucky for her, my feet felt better and the polish looked amazing. that's what salvaged her tip.

plus, since i've worked in the service industry (i waitressed at ruby tuesday. i was a legend), i just feel horrible if i ever go somewhere and don't leave a tip. hourly does not cut it, because most companies expect you to make "commission" off each customer anyway, also known as tips.

i made $3.08 per hour when i served, and i hardly ever got a paycheck. if i did, it was always under $7 because of the tips i made. let's say i worked a lunch shift (11-3, typically, depending on the flow of business). during a typical lunch rush, i would have 5 tables (a 2 seat, 3-4 seats, and a 5-6 seat table), and if it was an awesome day, all of those tables would be filled. in that 4 hours, i could easily walk out with over $75 in tips, which puts me at about $18.75 per hour, untaxed. that's why i never got a paycheck.

the only thing that sucked bad, was the fact that business was slightly unpredictable, which meant my hours were also unpredictable, along with my cash flow. i could work a double on a saturday and bring home at least $200 in tips that day. monday morning, i may only make $20. it really depended on the day.

luckily i lived with my mom when i worked at ruby's. the only bills i had, then, were car insurance and my cell phone bill. how i long to return to those days. except for the whole not really getting a paycheck part. that part, i don't miss.

i had a great weekend. j and i went to this really cool hotel called aloft near IAD (dulles international airport in dulles/ashburn, va), which is like a subsidiary hotel of the w hotel, aka "costs an arm and a leg to stay there" hotel. in new york, the w averages around $400/night. aloft, however, averages around $60/night. it's very cool, very colorful and modern, and it's constructed like a loft instead of your standard hotel room. i loved it.

we had a huge flat screen tv, a play box (outlets for an ipod, ps3, laptop, etc), a huge bed, a glass shower, and this really cool sink that was all water fountain-y. i absolutely loved it, and since there are so many alofts all over, i'm pretty sure we're never staying anywhere else.

anyway (huge tangent, i don't know where that came from), the pamper day was cool. i didn't get any waxing done (eyebrows/lip) because i didn't need it, and because the little nail salons in the past have always done a craptastic job on my eyebrows anyway. no thanks; i do them myself.

however, when i go to a real spa, i will get the waxing works. brazilian, eyebrow, and lip. oh gosh, how i am dreading the brazilian.

i had one friend tell me it's a humbling experience because your lady parts are up in the air. i had one tell me it's liberating. i had another one tell me it's worth it, and it only takes about 10 or 11 good yanks to finish.

liquor me up.

46. try a new exotic food

okay, so this is probably not exotic, but it's definitely different for me.

this past week, i tried vegetarian food.

i tried this dish called shepherd's pie from a place in DC (of course) called eternal life. i would link it here, but i can't find it online, which scares me. mainly because you all know that everything is so much more official if it's on the internet. the internet is all that is right and good with the world today.

anyway, it was really good. the standard recipe typically has diced potatoes, but the one i had consisted of the mashed version. i think there was some tofu in this one but no mushrooms. i was a little apprehensive at first, probably because i've never had the carnivorous version of shepherd's pie, but this one was really good.

...and if you're backed up, this will totally take care of that issue for you; i promise.

i think that's where the catch 22 comes in, honestly, because i did not enjoy the aftermath of this dish. maybe it was because i spent tne entire weekend chilling on cool porcelain. i'm not opposed to regularity. not at all. but not at the expense of my entire weekend! i didn't even get to go to the gym on sunday, which totally blew me. literally and figuratively.

maybe it's called shepherd's pie because the shepherd killed every animal it herds to make it. but since this dish was vegetarian, i'm probably only slightly inaccurate. just slightly.

i'm hoping i will try something a little more exciting and exotic soon, but after this fiasco, i'm thinking maybe my body is not a fan of exciting and exotic things.

however, this will not stop me from getting a brazilian. nope. it surely won't.

38. consider getting lasik eye surgery

this weekend was a doozy for my eyes. a doozy, okay? it was awful.

i seriously considered getting lasik eye surgery for the first time in my life.

now, i talk a good game when i'm irritated with something (read: lack of eye sight), but usually it fizzles out within one or two days.

this time *blank stare* no, i am really considering lasik.

how about i totally forgot i had to have my pupils dilated at my eye exam on saturday? now, the last time this happened was about 2 years ago and i felt like i had my eyes wide open but i was blind. very much so an oxymoronical situation, very much so unappreciated. i had to have my homie claire drive me home and had to be hand walked into my apartment. i almost fell twice--once out of her lift kit jeep, and we all know i am a klutz, and once into my doorway.

this time, chelsea had to pick me up from the optometrist. i love my sister, but she is a newbie driver. she was my only early morning option, and she is always biting at the chance to drive someone somewhere.

i've let her use my car before and i've rode in the car when she drives, but not being able to see properly puts an entirely different spin on the experience.

i'm sure she wanted to eject me from the car.

the drive from the eye doctor to my house is approximately 5-7 mins. apparently, that is long enough for me to have a heart attack, stroke, and panic attack. really ridiculous.

so it all started off with me being reassessed for contacts, just because i was on a trial basis with them for the past 2 weeks. i ordered 2 pairs of glasses and a box of contacts. my eyes get dry quickly and when they're tired of the contacts, i would still like sight.

then, the doctor puts these drops in my eyes and says, "follow me." i felt like i was being led to a white, window-less van. i could see nothing and he was walking too fast! i had to stop and hold onto the wall. it was then, i thought he's drugged me. those drops were to blind me and he's going to drag me off in a white, window-less van and have his way with me...

then miraculously, i was seated at a consultation desk.

so much for my auto-biography, right? *sigh*

but i digress.

my eyes feel worse and worse for about 30 mins, then the doctor drags me back into the exam room and makes me look all over the place and says "everything's fine."

*pause*

clearly it isn't sir, because i feel like a vampire. the lights were way too bright. it was like a case of a hangover + sleeping in a coffin for 5 days + migraine + agoraphobia.

after they took my money for my sight, i went outside and put these ridiculous sunglasses on my face. definitely looked like an old woman with cataracts. not a good look for a hot 25 year old.

when i was making my way to the exit door, chelsea pulled up to the entrance, as if she was going to give me valet service. but no! alas, she drove away from me, to the parking lot, parks, and proceeds to laugh at me. it was no discreet effort, let me tell you.

i feel around by way of dirt, ditch, and tree to get to my car, and when i open the door, she is still laughing. annoyed at this point, i flail my arms around for emphasis, which makes her laugh harder.

*sigh*

on the way home, there are stop signs, stop lights, yields, no turns on red, left turn only, speed traps, picture-taking lights...you name it, we encountered it. thankfully, she did everything legally, minus the fact that i almost died.

when your pupils are dilated everything is bright and blurry--2 things you do not need in your life when in a car. every other direction we took was accompanied by a stop! or a slow the hell down, chelsea; i can't see! it was awesome.

we got home and my armpits were soaked. i needed a drink, she needed a tissue from crying laughing.

and this is when i decided i would see about lasik eye surgery. i'm not doing that again!

51. don't use "lol" for an entire week

i accomplished this! yes. it was so hard challenging for me at first, and i even had to delete some sentences because they seemed so harsh without my beloved "lol" but i made it through.

monday-tuesday were probably the hardest days, mainly because it seemed like i was not doing the funny things justice without using "lol"...the funny things seemed really mundane and boring when typed, and so i had to find other ways to express how humorous a situation was. some of my favorite lines were:

i am really struggling not to use an acronym right now.
this is definitely "laughing my a** off" worthy.
#dead
*flatlines*

and my all-time favorite:

okay, that just took me out of here.

i had to be extra creative to get an "lol" point across without seeming corny i struggled with this, too or crass it didn't always work out.

wednesday morning, looking back, was probably the most ironic of all. i *ahem* got into somewhat of an argument with the infamous ronnie (my biological father).

now, for those of you who know this story/saga/mess, you understand why this is really nothing new. but for you new buddies (welcome!), i'm going to rewind a bit.

skip all the way past my childhood, because that isn't what this is about (long story short, he was incarcerated from when i was 5 months old until i was almost 23 years old). let's get right to the nitty gritty. since his release in may or something of 2009, he has been a like an upper respiratory infection in my life. not serious enough to kill me, but definitely annoying for a few days here and there throughout the year. and if you're anything like me, you get these about once every season or quarterly. oh, and if i don't see a doctor (typically my mom, in the case of ronnie), things get that much worse because the irritation festers.

on tuesday evening, he e-mailed me offering to give me a cd/radio console for my car. now, keep in mind my car is less than 5 years old and everything in it is directly from the manufacturer, including the sound system (which comes with an ipod/mp3 player plug-in and a cd deck). a big bank still technically owns my car since i still make monthly payments, so i'm not trying to do anything too permanent to the car before it is totally all mine--which would, even then, only include speaker enhancement and maybe a slight tint on the windows--just in case i trade my car in next year for a new one.

it took me a few hours to decide i wasn't going to take something from him, just because he offered and it's free. i flat out didn't need the unit and wouldn't use it, so the next morning, at the crack of dawn, i replied with my answer.

after replying, i checked facebook. now, the previous day i'd told him to stop poking me (gross, right?). this had to have been about the eleventy-ninth time i've asked him to stop. not to mention i've ignored him and he's still done it. i've also put him on limited profile where he was unable to poke me.

then facebook changed the privacy settings and i started getting poked again.

*pause*

*taps foot*

so i got agitated. this is one of the many examples of this guy not respecting my wishes, not listening, not understanding. so i told him "enough with the poking, okay? who pokes?! sheesh... :)" now, this was during my "don't use lol" week, so i couldn't use it to lighten the load. while i was dead serious, i meant no harm...i just wanted him to back off listen and understand.

instead, i get a smart ass reply that said "i don't know, there's a lot of don't do this and don't do that, but you can't even answer a question. a simple yes or no would've sufficed, but anyway, how are you?" now, i rephrased so that it sounds coherent, but this same message was typed with a lot of internet lingo and southern slang. so much, that the sentences were almost unrecognizable.

this is when i lit him up. i went back to the e-mail and asked that he check time stamps before he opens his mouth about someone not replying.

needless to say, i haven't received a reply, which is probably for the best, since i have a really tough time holding my tongue with this guy.

i may even post an entry about the estrangement stuff later, because i need to get a lot off my chest and i just flat out hate don't like this guy at all. there are no appealing or redeeming qualities whatsoever that make me feel any differently. *shrugs*

but i digress.

that was my only adverse event in my quest to not use "lol" for an entire week. mostly everyone else didn't notice or just didn't mention it. i had a lot of fun with it...i think.

for humor's sake: lol.

have you ever tried to stop using some of the humorous acronyms? what were your tragedies and triumphs? do you have any hilarious stories from moments where you had to catch yourself before using it?

i make it sound like drugs.

3. drink only water (for the entire week)

whoa. i actually did this. *gets cocky*

okay, well, sort of. *hangs head* i drank only water all week with the exception of one cup of cranberry juice and one cup of orange juice, all together. how awesome is that? i have never done that before.

i definitely thought i was going to die. i love juice too much! much more than the average person, i'm sure. which is good, but it's actually bad, too.

monday, i kinda forgot that i was doing the only water diet, and jesse bought me something spicy (jamaican jerk chicken) for lunch...as we all know water does absolutely nothing for a spicy mouth. that food actually made my head feel like it was going to explode.

...but it was so good. i'd tolerate that spice all over again, just to have that jerk chicken from this awesome place in northwest dc.

so i had a couple sips of jesse's tea, just to knock out the spice that was taking over my life for about 5 minutes.

the orange juice. my favorite drink in the entire world, honestly. i drank less than 6 oz of it on wednesday morning because i'd just been in a car accident and went to breakfast for some comfort. it was a not so awesome morning, and i had to call out of work (which i hated) to handle claims and blah blah blah.

another segue--the car accident. i was in shoulder to shoulder, bumper to bumper, rush hour traffic on i-495 on wednesday morning. this...woman (i had a few other words in mind, but i'll leave those to your imagination)...drives onto the shoulder, only to return to the lane by sideswiping my car.

she was originally driving behind me in the far left lane. i put my signal on so i can attempt to get into the next right lane, because it seemed like the "fast lane" was not moving at all. i never got a chance to get over because none of the cars driving in that lane would allow me to do so. so i take my foot off the brake and start to creep up a bit, when pow! dumb ass the lady strikes my car on the front driver's side.

now, being the hot headed cynic that i am, my first reaction was to stare at her car as if to say "are you kidding me?" she puts her car in park, gets out, looks at my damage, looks at hers, then yells, "oh okay!" um, no ma'am! pull over. thanks.

when i got out of the car and looked at my damage, this is how the conversation went:

me: ma'am. are you serious right now?

her: what? i thought you were getting over.

me: ma'am. really? did i ever leave the lane? no. what in the world were you doing on the shoulder?! it's not a passing lane!

her: well you had your blinker on--

me: --ma'am, because that's what people use to let other people know that they are trying to yield into the next lane. it doesn't magically place my car in the next lane!

her: well didn't you get back over?

me: *hardest sigh ever* ma'am, that would insinuate that i left the lane, which i never did, which is why you found yourself on the shoulder. who does that, ma'am?! are you kidding me?

her: oh. well, i'm sorry.

me: yeah are you, ma'am? are you serious right now?

*pause*

me: should i call the police? is that what would help you decide what to do next?

her: no! it's my fault, we can exchange insurances.

me: *sigh* fine.

so i spared her, because i'm guessing she didn't want a couple of tickets and fines for being in the shoulder and using it as a passing lane, especially during rush hour traffic.

it gets even better. i called her insurance company about 4 or 5 hours after the accident, just to give her a chance to call them first and file the claim. she never called and they had no idea an accident had occurred. so i had to file the claim with the rep, talk to the claims adjustor, and the appraiser, all before she'd even called them. now the adjustor's called her at least 5 times and she's returned the call and left a message once, and he hasn't spoken to her live once.

mind you, i've already had the car appraised for damages. while they are menial, i still want them repaired because i'm still considering trading in my car in about a year or so.

so that's why i drank orange juice. i also had a ny strip steak with eggs and home fries that morning, too. with biscuits. it felt so good.

then friday, i had a glass of cranberry juice, accompanied by water, at dinner with my twin, keturah (i'll talk more about her in another post).

we went to an italian restaurant called brio. i highly recommend it for the atmosphere and of course, the food! everything on the menu looks amazing, and the prices aren't too bad, either. we got appetizers, entrees, and desserts for around $60.

so, i purged my entire week, just by telling you what i drank. how exciting.

are you trying out the 52 in 52 challenge? if you've completed some of your adventures, what has been your favorite one so far?

book update: the help

so i got a chance to finish reading the help over the weekend.

hands down, the book is so much better than the movie--and i loved the movie. it's a lot more detailed and has more exciting moments than the movie did.

i have a few favorite parts in the book, but the one that still sticks with me is when skeeter's mom said, "don't let him cheapen you."

leading up to that, skeeter was dating stuart, the local senator's son. he'd just gotten out of a relationship where his ex-fiance cheated on him and then moved to california (from mississippi). they'd been dating a few months when his parents invited skeeter and her parents to the house for dinner. it didn't go all that well because stuart's mom talked about patricia (stuart's ex) the entire evening, directly and indirectly, making it awkward.

afterward, skeeter told stuart to go find himself (paraphrasing) and that she knew he still had feelings for patricia. she didn't hear from him for a while, considering they'd been seeing each other twice a week for months at this point.

out of the blue, stuart calls skeeter. after the phone conversation, that's when her mother (mrs. phelan) says, "don't let him cheapen you."

in a nutshell, it meant that she deserved better from someone who claimed to love her. she's not a "piece" and she shouldn't make herself available just because he is. also, he doesn't get to have his cake and eat it, too, and that he needed to choose where he was going to place his efforts because skeeter didn't need to settle.

all of this coming from her mother, was really amazing. mrs. phelan rode skeeter about shoes, accessories, her height, her hair, her clothes, the fact that she smoked cigarettes, the fact that she wasn't ready to get married...pretty much everything. and there was always a negative connotation to anything she said to skeeter. so to hear her build skeeter up, telling her that she could do better, was really touching.

there are so many great things about this book, especially the fact that the book help was published (within the book), and exceeded the publishing company's expectations so much, that they printed a second run of 5,000 copies. pretty awesome.

so, i would highly recommend the book! and the movie!

i also saw columbiana over the weekend. amazing.

52. write a [good] haiku

feeling low today?
talk to a good friend who cares.
never give up hope.

**
i wrote this saturday after a very emotional friday night. i was feeling a bit depressed about a few things going on lately, and out of the blue, a very close friend checked on me and i was able to talk to her about some things. to have a girl friend who can relate to what you're dealing with, not judge you, and not make you feel crazy for feeling the way you do, or even more depressed, is truly a blessing.

today i am feeling so much better about life...i feel like i have a new outlook on life and i'm ready to start working on some lifelong goals.

mood: extremely grateful and humbled.

6. update on "jesse only" weekend

the weekend was amazing! jesse treated me to an all expense paid hotel weekend at the springhill suites by marriott. really nice place, great service.

and (!!!)...they had a pool! and a hot tub. i got to sleep pretty much all weekend. i ate good food, i swam to help my knee a bit (and it worked!!), and we really just finally had a chance to unwind and be alone. we never get alone time unless we're in the car to go meet someone related.

i read more of my 2nd book this month the help. and it's going really well. i should be able to finish within the next few days. it's actually better than the movie!

jesse and i watched a few really good movies on saturday (the rainmaker, the pelican brief, and the terminal), and we also ate pizza and pasta salad and had some really good merlot (sutter home).

we didn't completely nix the cell phones...we used them to keep abreast of football games, facebook stuff, etc. but we didn't do any calling or much texting. i'm proud of us! if you know us, you know how much we use or phones.

it really was an enjoyable, relaxing, well spent weekend. i wish every weekend could be that awesome. no real responsibilities, no crazy amounts of driving without any reward, just me and him, chilling.

i couldn't have asked for a better, more necessary weekend. or a better boyfriend.

6. enjoy an entire weekend with jesse with no cell phones

this weekend, starting immediately after both of us get off work today, jesse and i will be spending some long overdue and much needed (deserved, appreciated, etc), quality time. just us, with hardly the use of any cell phones.

location: i don't even know yet, that's how secret it is (lol).

the weekend will be over as of sunday afternoon, because i'm going to do my goddaughter's hair (in walkersville) and then we are going to spend some time with a few of my cousins until it's time to get ready for work on monday.

i'm stoked! i will definitely update on sunday for everything that we did! right now i'm just hoping we can swim (somewhere), eat good food, sleep randomly, watch movies, and play phase 10. anything else is even more awesome.

oh, and i have to get new tires put on my car. stupid maintenance.

16. read 2 books per month

i am currently reading the coldest winter ever and i will start the help once i finish it.

i figured i would go ahead and start writing this entry, since i committed to write once a week by saturday.

the coldest winter ever is a really good book. i know i know, i'm late. but! to my credit, i am really picky about reading books and watching movies. it's hard for me to get into a book that starts too slowly or doesn't give enough detail.

*becomes nostalgic*

i remember being assigned to read ordinary people in my senior year of high school by one of my favorite teachers to date, mrs. reickel. she was such a good teacher. this book, however, sucked. i may have read 3 total chapters--the first one, the last one, and maybe a random chapter in the middle.

because i have shiesty ways, i knew i would need to find a pinch-hit way to read this book. sparknotes was the thing back then when you were trying to avoid the above and beyond stuff, and there were none on this book. shows you how great it is, right there.

i ended up finding the 1980 version of the film. score, right? not so much. it was such a bad depiction of the book because it showcased parts of the book that weren't written in detail. so there i was, thinking i was doing the book justice by writing so passionately about the movie, that i ended up stepping in my own trap.

mrs. reickel--because she is awesome--graded my paper an A because of how well written it was (i used caps back then because i had to). but she wrote an extra note stating the A wouldn't stand because the part of the *ahem* "book" that i chose to write about, wasn't a big deal or a chapter's worth of writing in the book. she even mentioned that the scene i chose to write about, was actually much bigger in the movie. then she asked if i had read the book. i felt, maybe, 2 inches tall at that point.

she did give me a chance to rewrite the paper on the same horrible, god-forsaken book, but the book was so bad that i declined. she gave me 50 points out of the 100 possible, which i thought was generous, and i took it. i still got an A in that class. that's how i knew i wanted to write.

or embellish.

same thing.

so i said all that to say i am a picky reader, and this book is totally worth the effort. it's a bit raunchier than the books i typically read, but it has this amazing sense of reality.

it's about this druglord princess, winter santiaga. her father is big time in their area for his quality drugs. he employs many people in this business and is looted down. at the onset of the book, winter, her parents, and her 3 younger sisters are still living in the projects in brooklyn. her father eventually moves them to long island to this huge mansion.

winter's a young girl; she's under 18 and doing a lot more than i could imagine doing at her age. she's very street smart and could probably be book smart if she tried at all in school.

the book is actually pretty sad. i haven't finished it just yet, but i'm almost done. it seems like things will turn out good for winter, but i almost feel like she is doing everything she wants to do now and even with an epiphanic moment, she won't be rewarded or allowed to prosper off good works. something about the book just gives me that feeling, but i could be wrong.

she has done everything from drinking excessively to having sex, getting in fights and stepping on people to get ahead. using men for sex and money, stealing money...and she brags a lot about the things her father has done for her with illegal money (did i mention that their long island home eventually gets raided by the fbi and her father is sent to prison for tax evasion and purchasing items with illegally gained funds? i didn't...oh).

so yeah, in a nutshell, it's a good read that will make you want to keep reading. if i could, i would sit and finish the book today, but i don't have enough free time! i should be done by the weekend, though, and i will update.

next: the help (and i've already seen the movie and heard rave reviews of the book, so i could not be more excited. just waiting on it to be delivered from amazon!)

43. get my knee checked out

so i decided (not really, but i digress) to get started on my 52in52 list by getting my knee checked out. i went to the ER yesterday--by force, not by choice--because i *ahem* mis-stepped and felt a crack in my knee. immediately following, my knee felt like it had exploded into flames. phoenix-esque, if you will. of course, i ignored this at first because i had to go to work, and i'm still within the confines of my probationary period.

let's rewind a bit. the reason why #43 is even on my list to begin with, is because i have been procrastinating--something i am really good at doing--about getting it looked at. about a month ago, i fell down 2 concrete stairs outside of jesse's parents' house in DC. it was so much fun that i sat there, on the concrete sidewalk, to soak in some sun. i looked to my left and the top of my foot was scratched up.

sidenote: how do you scratch up the top of your foot? how does that work? although i did this, i don't know how.

to my right, my knee was sore but there were no visible love marks from the stairs. jesse looks down and says, "what are you doing? what just happened?" i forgot to mention, i was in mid sentence when this fall occurred. so he's hovering over me, looking extremely puzzled--he's lucky he's cute.

so jesse helps me up, i brush myself off a bit and  walk limp to the car.

about a week later, this limp is going nowhere and i'm like mayyyybe i should go to the doctor.

this is the fun part. i called the medical insurance company to make sure my coverage was going to pay for the visit and when it would expire (i started a new job, but i still had coverage from the old one, lasting until the end of the month). they confirmed that it would expire at the end of the day on 7/31.

awesome. i will just go to the doctor on 7/31, then, and get everything taken care of. i didn't want to be in the doctor's office on my 25th birthday, or laid up in the bed as doctor's orders on my birthday, either.

i get to the urgent care facility on sunday (7/31), and their online system is showing that my benefits are inactive. i about lost it. i specifically called to verify the date and time they'd expire.

soon after, i found out that the urgent care facility was the culprit--they verify insurance online, and if they'd been able to call and verify, the coverage would've taken care of this visit. so at this point, i have no insurance. my new job's limited coverage hadn't kicked in yet, and so...i was screwed.

i tried the holistic approach--well, kind of. i took ibuprofen to help with swelling and inflammation, and i did a lot of icing and elevation. for the most part, it worked. i still couldn't bend my knee very well, but i didn't limp anymore on flat surfaces; i just struggled going up and down the stairs and walking on inclines and declines. no biggie, right?

wrong. yesterday morning i messed everything up again. i mis-stepped and felt the whole burning sensation and pop. i told jesse what happened and he was like, you're going to the doctor after work.

now typically with jesse, i can wiggle my way out of things like this by convincing him that everything is cool and i'm fine and it will get better--like i did the last time. but this time he didn't budge. smh.

so i go to the ER, just because i know they have all the equipment necessary to properly diagnose the problem. it didn't take too long...less than 3 hours. i found out that i may have a bone cyst. it's not an effect of the fall, but it could be the reason my knee is so weak and gave way to the fall. the doctor also thinks i may need an mri to see if maybe i tore the miniscus.

i now have this war-ready knee brace that spans from my middle upper thigh to my lower calf. and crutches. and best of all, i'm at work today.

my life rocks.

but! that is one week down of things to knock off on my 52in52. by default :)
